BIM Stewardship Scheme

An SEMS is a management tool that helps operators manage various aspects of its operation. It is based on the idea of continuous improvement following a model based on four key steps ‘Plan, Do, Check and Act’. Seafood Environmental Management Systems (SEMS) help operators to identify and reduce risk and to maximise opportunities in a coordinated way. They are designed to give insight into the most important aspects of a business, help to manage risks and introduce the most efficient and cost effective measures to reduce risk. They also help to manage legal compliance and performance requirements. To increase the credibility of your SEMS it may be worthwhile having it certified against a recognised standard that will assist you to promote your environmental, quality or business performance. There are a number of standards available.
• International Standards Organisation (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management Systems
• European Union Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)
• BIM ISO 65 Standard
• Fuchsia Code of practice
• Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Signing up to one of these standards/schemes brings recognised external approval and therefore credibility. This can demonstrate improved performance to others and give competitive advantage in the market place. This is an option worth investigating once you are familiar with the SEMS concept and what is involved in its development.
